Vehicular paving

Paul Hensey

Paul Hensey is a practising garden and landscape designer. He has been a registered member of the Society of Garden Designers since 2007 and was made a Fellow in early 2016. Originally trained as an industrial designer, Paul has used CAD systems for over 20 years. Early in his career he was the head of design for an international construction products manufacturer, giving him an invaluable insight into construction detailing and an appetite for understanding manufacturing techniques and the use of novel materials in gardens and landscapes. Paul has been the technical journalist for the Garden Design Journal since 2009 and writes their monthly feature on best practice and construction. A lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, Paul also teaches at several other colleges on garden design and CAD. Paul has won numerous RHS medals and is acknowledged for his contemporary and innovative gardens. Author affiliation details are correct at time of print publication.

Paul Hensey

Elizabeth M. Golden

Elizabeth M. Golden is a registered architect in the United States and in Germany. She has contributed her expertise to the design and construction of the Gohar Khatoon Girls’ School, the largest institution of its kind in Afghanistan, and to Niamey 2000, an urban housing proposal for the rapidly expanding capital of Niger. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, she teaches courses focused on design, materials, and building technology, with an emphasis on sustainable systems. Michael Dickson

Michael Dickson, C.B.E., F.R.Eng, F.I.StructE., F.I.C.E., Hon. F.R.I.B.A., was a Founding Partner of Buro Happold and Chairman 1996–2005. Buro Happold is an international multidisciplinary engineering and consultancy practice with offices in Europe, the Middle and Far East, and the USA. Michael is a Visiting Professor of Engineering Design at Bath University, School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and was President of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2006. Dave Parker

Dave Parker, B.Sc., C.Eng., F.I.C.E., F.R.S.A., F.I.Q.A., was Technical Editor of New Civil Engineer magazine for 12 years before leaving in May 2006 to become a freelance author and journalist. He is a former Visiting Professor of Civil Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, and his interests include renewable energy and the history of construction.
