Additive robotic fabrication of complex timber structures

Volker Helm

,

Volker Helm specialised in computer aided architectural design at ETH Zürich after successfully completing his studies in architecture at the University of Siegen (Germany). He subsequently worked for six years at the Herzog & de Meuron architectural office in Basel, specialising in the development, programming and realisation of complex geometries. Since 2010, Volker Helm has been working with Professor Fabio Gramazio and Professor Matthias Kohler as a research associate at ETH Zürich. Since 2013 he has been responsible for coordinating the research of the group. In 2015, he completed his doctoral degree which focuses on potentials of on-site robotic construction, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Georg Trogemann (Academy of Media Arts in Cologne) and Prof. Matthias Kohler (Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zürich). Michael Knauss

,

Michael Knauss is an architect and researcher based in Zurich, Switzerland. He studied architecture at the ETH Zürich and the University of Stuttgart where he graduated in 2007. Michael gained professional experience in the offices of UNStudio (Amsterdam) and LAVA (Stuttgart). He is a founding partner of the architectural practice ROK – Rippmann Oesterle Knauss GmbH. As researcher and project leader at Gramazio & Kohler Research, ETH Zürich, he focused on additive robotic timber construction. He was responsible for the development of the ‘Sequential Roof ’ and the NRP66 research project ‘Additive Robotic Fabrication of Complex Timber Structures’. Thomas Kohlhammer

,

Thomas Kohlhammer graduated first in civil engineering (2000) and afterwards in architecture (2004), both at the University of Stuttgart. Simultaneously he collaborates in several research projects at the University of Stuttgart. As of 2000 he gained practical experience in architecture and civil engineering offices in Stuttgart and Zurich. From 2005 to 2009 he worked as research and teaching assistant at the Chair of Structural Design, ETH Zürich. From 2009 to 2013 he did a PHD at the ETH Zürich (Prof. Dr. Joseph Schwartz). Since 2009 he has a lectureship in Structural Design at the Department of Architecture at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Since 2013 he has his own architecture office and works additionally as research fellow at the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication (Prof. Fabio Gramazio, Prof. Matthias Kohler), ETH Zürich. Fabio Gramazio

Fabio Gramazio is an architect with multi-disciplinary interests ranging from computational design and robotic fabrication to material innovation. In 2000, he founded the architecture practice Gramazio Kohler Architects in conjunction with his partner Matthias Kohler, where numerous award-wining designs have been realised. Opening also the world’s first architectural robotic laboratory at ETH Zürich, Fabio Gramazio’s and Matthias Kohler’s research has been formative in the field of digital architecture, setting precedence and de facto creating a new research field, merging advanced architectural design and additive fabrication processes through the customised use of industrial robots. This ranges from 1:1 prototype installations to the design of robotically fabricated high-rises. His work has been published in many journals, books and media, and was first documented in the book Digital Materiality in Architecture (2008). Aleksandra Anna Apolinarska is a researcher at Gramazio Kohler Research at the ETH Zürich. After graduating in Architecture from Poznan University of Technology and University of Stuttgart, she worked for various architectural offices across Europe, including Foster+Partners, designtoproduction, LAVA and UNStudio, specialising in computational design of complex geometries.
